Unity Cup Final: Super Eagles Eye Another Crown as Chelle Targets Jamaica Scalp

Defending champions Nigeria will look to retain their Unity Cup crown when they take on Jamaica in Saturday’s highly anticipated final in London, with Head Coach Eric Chelle insisting the Super Eagles are fully focused despite already showing flashes of brilliance in the tournament.

The clash will mark a repeat of the 2025 Unity Cup final, where the Super Eagles edged the Reggae Boyz 5-4 on penalties after an entertaining 2-2 draw to successfully defend the title they previously won in 2002 and 2004.

Nigeria booked their place in this year’s final after a commanding 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in Tuesday’s semi-final, a performance that left Chelle delighted with the squad’s intensity, organisation, and attacking quality.

However, the Malian tactician has hinted that he could make tactical and personnel adjustments ahead of the showdown with Jamaica as he continues experimenting with the largely fresh squad assembled for the tournament.

Cup holders Nigeria are determined not to underestimate the Jamaicans, who pushed the Eagles to the limit in last year’s dramatic final and remain one of the most athletic and dangerous teams in the competition.

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is expected to be handed a starting role after impressing with a clean sheet against Zimbabwe, while the defensive quartet of Chibueze Oputa, Chibuike Nwaiwu, Igoh Ogbu, and Obinna Igboke could retain their places following a composed display in the semi-final.

In midfield, Tochukwu Nnadi may once again partner Alhassan Yusuf and former Golden Eaglets captain Samson Tijani, while the attacking trio of Terem Moffi, Philip Otele, and debut sensation Femi Azeez are expected to lead Nigeria’s charge.

Azeez stole the headlines against Zimbabwe with a brilliant two-goal performance on his debut, becoming the first player to score twice on his first appearance for the Super Eagles since Mathias Obianika achieved the feat in Nigeria’s 4-0 victory over Burkina Faso 55 years ago.

The impressive display has raised expectations ahead of the final against a Jamaican side eager to avenge last year’s heartbreaking defeat.

The Super Eagles trained at Cray Valley on Thursday as preparations intensified for Friday’s official training session at The Valley Stadium.

Jamaica, meanwhile, secured their place in the final after defeating India 2-0 in the semi-final encounter.
