Chelle Invites Saudi Hotshot Ilenikhena, Isaac James for 2027 AFCON Qualifiers
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has handed maiden invitations to Saudi Arabia-based forward George Ilenikhena and Alverca left-back Isaac James for Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Naijasports reports.
According to an exclusive report by OwnGoalNigeria, Chelle has also recalled Banik Ostrava defender Abdullahi Bewene, goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, midfielder Alhassan Yusuf and Monza midfielder Ebenezer Akinsamiro to the national team.
Ilenikhena has earned his first senior call-up after making a blistering start to the new season in Saudi Arabia. The 19-year-old scored twice in his club’s 2-1 victory over Al Nassr last weekend, taking his tally to five goals in six appearances across all competitions.
Born in Nigeria but raised in France, Ilenikhena has reportedly committed his international future to the Super Eagles after being convinced by Chelle to represent Nigeria at senior level.
James, 22, has also been rewarded for his steady progress at Portuguese side Alverca. The left-back has been on Chelle’s radar since breaking into the first team last season following his move from French club Lorient.
His inclusion comes at a time when Nigeria are dealing with the injury to Zaidu Sanusi, with the Porto defender expected to spend around two months on the sidelines. James, however, faces competition for the left-back role from Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel, who have both featured in the position despite primarily operating on the right.
Bewene is another player returning to the squad after making his international debut against Poland before following it up with another impressive display against Portugal. His versatility, which allows him to operate at right-back or in midfield, provides Chelle with an additional option.
Okonkwo, who recently joined Charlton Athletic from Wrexham, also returns to the fold after making his Super Eagles debut during the summer Unity Cup tournament.
Yusuf has earned a recall following an impressive run of form with MLS side New England Revolution. The midfielder featured for Nigeria during the summer friendlies and has continued to make his mark at club level, registering five goals and two assists in 23 appearances.
Meanwhile, Akinsamiro returns to the national team after missing the summer friendly matches due to illness.
Nigeria will begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign against Madagascar in Uyo on September 23 before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau four days later.
