FG Approves Massive Upgrade of Moshood Abiola Stadium, Sports Facilities Across Nigeria

The Federal Government has approved a major nationwide upgrade of sports infrastructure, with the rehabilitation of the iconic Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja taking centre stage in a renewed push to restore Nigeria’s sporting facilities to international standards.

The approvals were confirmed during the National Sports Commission (NSC) Tenders Board Meeting, where several high-profile projects aimed at transforming sports development and athlete welfare across the country received the green light.

At the core of the initiative is the complete reconstruction of the pitch at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, which has faced heavy criticism in recent years due to its deteriorating condition and limited suitability for international matches involving Nigeria’s national teams.

The rehabilitation project will also cover the tartan tracks and extensive upgrades to other critical sections of the stadium, including the dressing rooms, media centre, VIP areas, corporate suites, public address systems, security infrastructure, roof membrane, and cooling and heating systems.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, described the approvals as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward reclaiming its place among leading sporting nations.

According to Dikko, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration views sports as a vital platform for youth empowerment, economic development, and national infrastructure growth.

He further revealed that President Tinubu had approved the creation of a National Sports Infrastructure Development Bond aimed at ensuring sustainable funding for the renovation, redevelopment, and long-term maintenance of sports facilities nationwide.

Beyond the stadium renovation, the Federal Government also approved the establishment of a High Performance Centre within the Abuja stadium complex to enhance athlete preparation and elite sports development.

Other approved projects include the redevelopment of a 200-bed athletes’ hostel into a modern hotel facility, rehabilitation of the swimming pool at Package B of the stadium complex, construction of two new training pitches, and the upgrade of sports medical facilities with modern equipment.

In another major development, the NSC also approved plans for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the historic Muda Lawal Stadium in Abeokuta, a move widely regarded as a tribute to one of Nigeria’s greatest football legends, Muda Lawal.

The Commission further approved the construction of a National Sports Centre to provide office accommodation for the NSC and various sports federations, while contracts for the establishment of an anti-doping laboratory have also been finalised.

Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, stated that the projects go beyond infrastructure renewal, stressing that the initiative is designed to create a complete sports ecosystem capable of driving talent development, job creation, and international competitiveness.

As part of the comprehensive modernisation plan, the Moshood Abiola Stadium will also benefit from the installation of international-standard floodlights, electronic advertising boards, protective pitch covers, and Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology as Nigeria intensifies preparations to host and compete in major international sporting events.
