BREAKING: Eric Chelle Talks Tough Ahead of Unity Cup Final Clash Against Jamaica
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has declared that Nigeria is fully prepared to defend its Unity Cup crown ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated final against Jamaica in London.
The Franco-Malian tactician insisted that his young squad has embraced a winning mentality and will be ready for whatever challenge comes their way when they face the Reggae Boyz in another blockbuster Afro-Caribbean showdown.
Nigeria and Jamaica booked their places in the final after defeating Zimbabwe and India respectively by identical 2-0 scorelines in the semi-finals.
Saturday’s encounter will mark the third meeting between both nations in the history of the Unity Cup tournament, a competition that celebrates football, music, and culture in the British capital.
The last final between both sides produced fireworks in 2025, when the Super Eagles defeated Jamaica 5-4 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw at Brentford Stadium.
On that occasion, Moses Simon handed Nigeria an early lead before Kaheim Dixon responded almost immediately for Jamaica. Samuel Chukwueze restored Nigeria’s advantage in the second half, only for Jon Russell to equalise once again for the Reggae Boyz and force the contest into penalties.
While Simon and Chukwueze are absent from this year’s tournament, the Super Eagles have continued to impress with a largely new-look squad.
Nigeria outclassed Zimbabwe in the semi-final thanks to a superb brace from debutant Femi Azeez, while Jamaica secured victory over India with goals from Courtney Clarke and Kaheim Dixon.
Speaking ahead of the final, Chelle admitted penalties remain a possibility but stressed that his focus is solely on winning the trophy regardless of how the game unfolds.
“Penalties are part of the game, and it can decide who wins a match,” Chelle said.
“Every time I go into a game, I have the mentality to win. This is the culture I have put in these boys – the winning culture.”
The former Mali coach also praised the hunger and determination within his youthful squad, expressing confidence in their ability to rise to the occasion.
“I don’t know if Saturday’s game will end in penalties; what I know is that I have prepared my team to win,” he added.
“These are very young players with a bright future and they are hungry for success at any level. So, on Saturday, we will see how the game is decided, but we surely have prepared to win and defend the Unity Cup.”
With both teams carrying attacking threats and confidence into the final, another entertaining contest is expected in London as Nigeria chase back-to-back Unity Cup triumphs.
