Nigerian international and Super Falcons forward, Ifeoma Onumonu, has officially announced her retirement from professional football at the age of 31, bringing an end to an inspiring career that spanned over two decades.
In a heartfelt statement shared on her social media pages, Onumonu expressed deep gratitude as she bid farewell to her playing career, reflecting on her journey that began at just eight years old.
> “I started playing football when I was eight years old… I didn’t much care about winning or losing; I just loved playing. I loved discovering what my body could do and what I could do with the ball,” she wrote.
Over the years, Onumonu’s passion and dedication to the game saw her achieve remarkable milestones. She represented Nigeria at both the Olympic Games and the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and was part of the Super Falcons squad that lifted the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy for a record 10th time.
At club level, she also celebrated success in the United States, winning the NWSL Championship with NJ/NY Gotham FC, capping off a decorated club career.
Reflecting on her journey, she said her retirement marks not an end but “a new beginning,” as she looks forward to exploring opportunities off the pitch, applying the skills and lessons she has learned from the beautiful game.
> “Although my time as a player has come to an end, my love and devotion for this game will never waver,” she added.
Onumonu’s announcement has drawn warm tributes from fans, teammates, celebrating her achievements and the legacy she leaves behind for women’s football in Nigeria and beyond.
Happy retirement, champ.
