“It’s Horrible to Think About” – Terem Moffi Opens Up on Nigeria’s World Cup Heartbreak

Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi has delivered an emotional reflection on Nigeria’s recent World Cup disappointments, admitting it would be painful for members of the current generation to end their careers without featuring at football’s biggest tournament.

Speaking on AySuga Channel, the FC Porto forward acknowledged the reality facing several senior players in the squad as time continues to run out on their World Cup ambitions.

“I’m 27 now. In the next World Cup, I’ll be 31, and most of the squad will be in their 30s as well,” Moffi said.

“It’s almost impossible for us to be there if we’re being totally honest.”

The striker’s comments come against the backdrop of two painful World Cup qualification failures for Nigeria in recent years.

The Super Eagles first missed out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after suffering elimination to Ghana in the final qualifying playoff. More recently, Nigeria’s hopes of reaching this year’s tournament were dashed after a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the African playoffs.

Those setbacks have left many members of the current squad facing the possibility of never appearing at a World Cup, a prospect Moffi admits is difficult to accept.

“For some of us, we might have to watch from home,” he continued.

“How do we tell our children that we had two chances to be at the World Cup and we didn’t take it?

“It’s horrible to think about.”

The 27-year-old’s candid remarks highlight the emotional toll of Nigeria’s recent qualification disappointments and the determination within the squad to avoid another missed opportunity in the future.

For a generation of Super Eagles stars that has consistently competed at the highest level in European football, the absence of a World Cup appearance remains a painful void.

As Nigeria continues rebuilding under head coach Eric Chelle, Moffi’s comments are likely to serve as motivation for a squad determined to avoid another painful absence from football’s grandest tournament.
