Wilfred Ndidi Set to Lead Super Eagles as New Captain for 2025 AFCON
Wilfred Ndidi is close to being confirmed as the next permanent captain of the Super Eagles, stepping into the role following William Troost-Ekong’s recent retirement from international football.
Ekong, who guided Nigeria to a silver-medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, brought an end to his ten-year international career on Thursday after earning 83 caps. His departure leaves a leadership gap that head coach Eric Chelle is expected to fill with Ndidi.

With the 2025 AFCON fast approaching—now just a few weeks away—Ndidi is seen as the natural choice to take over the armband. The 28-year-old has already captained the national team several times, including during the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs last November. Under his guidance, Nigeria defeated Gabon to reach the final stage, although they ultimately fell short of the intercontinental playoffs after losing to DR Congo on penalties.
Ndidi’s experience is a major factor in the decision. Since making his debut in 2015, coincidentally against DR Congo, he has earned 71 caps and remains one of the most senior figures in Eric Chelle’s provisional squad for the upcoming tournament.
The Leicester City midfielder previously played at the 2019 and 2021 AFCON editions but was sidelined during the 2023 competition due to injury. Now healthy and fully involved, he is poised to lead Nigeria as they begin their 2025 AFCON campaign on December 23 against Tanzania in Fez.
