Benin, coached by former Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr, struggled to find any clear-cut chances against Nigeria’s solid defensive line, which was led by William Troost-Ekong. Despite some early pressure, Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made double saves to deny Benin’s target man Steve Mounie.

Eguavoen will be pleased with his team’s overall performance, as they now lead Group D after this strong opening result. Reflecting on the game, Eguavoen praised his players for their determination and execution. “We knew Benin would be tough, especially with Gernot Rohr in charge, but the boys did a fantastic job. This is just the start, and we need to keep up the hard work as we push for qualification,” he said.

This win sends a clear message from the Super Eagles: they are ready for the road to AFCON 2025, with a promising blend of young talent and seasoned veterans leading the way.
