From Ningurume to Spain: Khalid Makes History as Second Kwara Indigene to Join Sporting Gijón After Rashidi Yekini

It is a proud moment for the people of Baruten and Kwara State as a young talent from Ningurume, Khalid Adamu, has made history by signing with Sporting Gijón, becoming only the second indigene of the state to achieve this feat after the legendary Rashidi Yekini in 1995.

Khalid, son of Ajia Raliyat and Adamu, hails from Ningurume in Baruten LGA and currently resides in Ilorin. A graduate of Geology from Kwara State University (class of 2021/2022), Khalid’s story is one of determination, hard work, and the relentless pursuit of dreams.

The journey began in 2023 when DollyP Sports Academy held a virtual meeting with Sporting Gijón through the efforts of its Director, Ahmad Yusuf, and Mr. Fernandez. In February 2024, a delegation from the Spanish club flew into Ilorin to test several players. Within just 30 minutes of play on the pitch, Khalid’s outstanding talent and resilience caught their attention, setting him apart from all others.

His selection is not only a personal victory but also a monumental achievement for Kwara State and the Baatonu people, who now celebrate Khalid as a beacon of inspiration for young athletes across the region.

Sporting Gijón, officially known as Real Sporting de Gijón, is a professional football club based in Gijón, Asturias, Spain, with a rich history of producing and nurturing top football talents.

Khalid’s breakthrough reminds many of Rashidi Yekini’s legendary journey, symbolizing hope and showing that with talent and perseverance, dreams are valid.

For the youths of Baruten and beyond, Khalid’s achievement is a call to believe in their abilities, to work hard, and to never give up. Today, Ningurume, Baruten and all of Kwara celebrate a son who has risen to carry their pride onto the global stage.
