World Cup Qualifier: Experts Assess Super Eagles’ Chances Against Bafana Bafana

Football experts have labelled Tuesday’s World Cup qualifying match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana as a crucial encounter that could significantly influence Nigeria’s qualification campaign.
The Super Eagles are set to take on Bafana Bafana at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, with kick-off scheduled for 5 p.m. Nigerian time and 6 p.m. South African time.
Currently, Nigeria sits third in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, having accumulated 10 points from seven games. They trail behind South Africa, who top the group with 16 points, and Benin with 11 points.
Other teams in the group include Rwanda with eight points, Lesotho with six, and Zimbabwe at the bottom with four points. In separate discussions with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday, analysts agreed that while Nigeria’s qualification hopes are still alive, winning all remaining fixtures is critical.
Upcoming matches, particularly the one against South Africa, are seen as pivotal by football analysts, who describe the clash as not just essential but also a statement of Nigeria’s ambitions.
Football analyst Monday Izegagbe emphasized that Nigeria’s abundant talent needs to translate into a well-coordinated performance. He cautioned that South Africa is a disciplined, tactically savvy side determined to book their place at the World Cup. Izegagbe highlighted Nigeria’s inconsistency, especially defensive weaknesses and vulnerable midfield transitions, despite having top players like striker Victor Osimhen and midfielder Alex Iwobi in form.
He pointed out that under coach Hugo Broos, South Africa has experienced a revival, with a squad that combines youthful vigor and tactical rigor.
“Bafana Bafana have evolved. Nigeria must not take them lightly as they are now stronger, better organized, and highly motivated,” Izegagbe said. Nonetheless, he expressed confidence in Nigeria’s offensive capabilities. “With Osimhen leading the attack, we can trouble any defence. What’s needed is calmness, concentration, and resolve.”
Izegagbe added that the match carries huge stakes for both teams. A win for South Africa could severely hamper Nigeria’s World Cup ambitions, whereas a Nigerian victory would inject fresh energy into their campaign.
“This fixture is about pride, momentum, and belief. Nigeria deserves to be on football’s grandest stage, and making it to the World Cup is non-negotiable,” he asserted.
Former Nigerian international Azuka Izu also urged the Super Eagles to maintain focus, warning against underestimating the progress Bafana Bafana have made under their coach Hugo Broos. “South Africa are a strong side now, but the Eagles possess the quality to deliver a victory. The team must exhibit discipline, unity, and fight for the nation,” Izu said.
He further explained that Tuesday’s match will test Nigeria’s resilience and determination, emphasizing that complacency would be costly if the Super Eagles want to keep their World Cup dream alive.
“This is a battle of pride and momentum. Winning can alter the trajectory of the qualifiers. Missing the World Cup is not an option for the Super Eagles,” Izu stressed.
According to NAN, Nigeria currently trails South Africa in Group C and must secure a win in this encounter to enhance their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.
